Formål

The general objective of the course is to enable students to understand better processes of globalization, media convergence and the transformation from the industrial to the information society. It is aimed in particular at the role of the Internet as the basic infrastructure for the global information society at its political, legal, economic, social and cultural implications. The course covers the broad range of issues, which has been discussed and negotiated in the process of the Word Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

Indhold

The course has four parts. Part I covers the history of the media, the right to communicate, globalization, digitalization, convergence and the results of the UN World Summit on the Information Society. Part II discusses more in detail the history of the Internet, its functioning, the role of the technical Internet core resources as well as the various policy models for the governance of the Internet. Part III covers a selected number of concrete Internet applications and challenging issues like cyber crime, privacy, intellectual property and eCommerce. The Final Parts discusses European policies towards the information society and the Internet as well as the challenge of the Digital Divide.

Faglige forudsætninger

Students, participating in the course, should have a basic understanding of theories of the information society and the role of the Internet.
