Stalin and Stalinism

In this seminar on Stalin and Stalinism we will start by looking at the man himself, his participation in the Russian revolutionary movement and his coming to power in the Soviet Union .   We will then focus on the ideology and practices of the Stalinist dictatorship, from 1928-1953, including the various social mobilization processes, such as industrialization and collectivization of the peasantry.   The impact of the Great Terror and World War II on Soviet society will also be studied, as well as the early Cold War and Stalin's foreign policy.   At the end of the course students should understand the role Stalin and Stalinism played in twentieth-century Russian and world history and they should be familiar with the historiographical debates on Stalin and Stalinism.
