Nordic Video Practice in a Historical and Contemporary Perspective. (Contemporary Nordic Arts, Literature and Culture)
The primary purpose of the course is to discuss current developments within Nordic and particularly Danish literature, music, film, art, theatre, media etc. We deal with developments in and between the arts and discuss these in a Nordic as well as a global perspective. Each year we deal with this field of inquiry under the aegis of one or more particular themes or recent theoretical developments.
The course examines the use of video in contemporary Danish and Nordic art. Attention will be given to the study of the art works themselves and the various strategies invested in video based works. But we will also take a more inclusive approach to the art form and here we shall examine videos embeddedness in contemporary culture, its capacities for staging as well as responding to the cultural problematics of a globalised culture.
A historical dimension will be incorporated which serves to interrogate the historical formation of video as an art form. Here we shall focus on how video participates in a process of dematerialisation of the physical object of art and a move into social and cultural realms.
As regards comparative perspectives between different cultural forms a topic of interest for the course will be the relation of video art to film and television, but we will also take into consideration video s relation to other art forms within the visual arts and its participation in the post-medium specific discourse of contemporary art.
Apart from the weekly scheduled lectures, all students are encourages to participate in a trip to Venice (for the biennale of cont. art.). This excursion will take place in Sept./primo Oct., and those who want to go on the trip are required to registre in June. The registration date and details will be announced in First Class in May/June.
