Narrators in Trouble in Twentieth Century Fiction and Film
Articulation is no picnic. Speech can be an act of violation, voice as slippery as eels, and silence as loud as yelling. This course focuses on the terms and anatomy of narration, voice and telling in a series of fictional and theoretical texts, as well as a film, from the last hundred years. We are going to explore various cases of displaced and impeded speech, stutters and silence as well as double-voiced disorientation.
The four main texts of the course as listed below - novels by Ray Bradbury, Don DeLillo and Paul Auster, as well as a play by Edward Albee - approach this theme of troubled narration from different points of view. Bradbury describes a society of banned articulation and forbidden writing. Novels are illegal food for thought and must be burned, at 451 degrees Fahrenheit. Albee portrays two characters in violently outspoken, yet strangely silent, conflict. Their verbal lashings are markers of absence and denial. DeLillo's short novel tracks the efforts of a grieving protagonist to gradually rearticulate both her body and her relationship with the world around her. And finally, Auster's typically many-layered text traces the multiple stories and characters appearing in the wake of the search for a silent film actor who mysteriously disappeared years and years ago.
