Northern Ireland : Segregated Peace and Regional Visions
The conflict in Northern Ireland is said to be over now that a political settlement has been reached, the regional assembly has been re-opened and the two most radical nationalist and unionist parties have formed a government. However, the political settlement should only be seen as a first step towards peace. Northern Ireland is no longer torn by political violence, but parts of the two 'communities' are still divided and physically segregated, each living in their sections of the major cities behind 'peace walls'. Therefore, the major challenge is now to create the right conditions for reconciliation and to revitalise a province which, for decades, has survived only on a large public sector and transfers from London. Moderate Unionists believe that greater political collaboration between Ireland South and North is needed, but others fear that this might lead Northern Ireland down the road to Irish reunification, a nightmare vision for the majority. First, we shall look at the major explanations of the conflict and at the peace process. Then, we shall analyse changes in political ideology and collective identity both North and South. Finally, we shall consider what we may learn from the peace process about conflict solution strategies in ethnic/national conflicts and how the settlement reflects the new regional politics of the British Isles.
