Writing about Music, Musing about Writing
"Why append a CD - or, rather, two CDs - to a novel about music? Is it not rather like attaching a whale to a copy of Moby Dick ?" asks author Vikram Seth in the booklet that accompanies a CD assembling the major pieces of music mentioned in his novel An Equal Music . In a similar vein, and going beyond the obvious answers (to "give pleasure" and to make money), this course will investigate some of the motivations for writing about music.
This investigation is located in the borderlands between related but distinct art forms. Music and literature share numerous affinities (e.g. rhythm or themes), they overlap in phrases such as 'musicality of language' or 'symphonic poem' and they often complement one another, as in song lyrics, libretti or film scores. Hence, is reading about music an impoverished and reductive activity?
It certainly would be, if this enterprise were restricted to thematic or imagological questions.
We will discuss narratives about music in the context of representation. If a text deals with music, or musicians, or the effects of listening, playing or composing music and related motifs, this raises questions about the possibilities and limits of writing and art in general. We will address these issues with special emphasis on stereotyping in the characterisation of artist figures as outsiders or misfits, theories of intermediality, and other border-crossing themes, such as cultural differences.
