English in North America : Past, Present, and Future
Although English has only been spoken in North America for 400 years, today speakers of American English well outnumber speakers of British English. The first permanent English speaking settlers in Newfoundland, Virginia and Massachusetts took the English language to North America in the seventeenth century. Over the following centuries, immigrants from all over the world, both English-speaking (e.g. from Scotland and Ireland), and speakers of other languages (e.g. from Africa and other parts of Europe) have influenced the varieties of English spoken in North America; and as a result, English on the North American continent has developed its own distinct varieties. In this century, Mexican Spanish is one of the languages to have the most influence on English in the US, while African American Vernacular English (AAVE) remains one of the most controversial varieties.
In this class we will cover:
- similarities and differences between Standard English in England, the US, and Canada and the historical background to the establishment of those differences
- features of selected varieties of English in North America (e.g. Appalachian, Urban AAVE, Chicano English, Newfoundland English) and the possible origin of those features
- the status and possible influence of indigenous languages on English
- issues concerning Spanish in the US South-West and French in Québec
- principles of language change, language internal and external reasons for change and how language change is studied
- the direction of change and the future: convergence or divergence?
The background for this class is material covered in the second year class History and Development of the English Language as well as the first year classes in English linguistics. Second year valgfag (Comparative Syntax, English Phonetics beyond the Basics, and Introduction to Sociolinguistics) will give you additional resources that you may want to draw on when writing your paper, but are not essential.
Den studerende kan først indstille sig til prøven i bachelorprojektet, når samtlige andre prøver på de to første år af bacheloruddannelsen er bestået.

Den første del af semesteret består af emneundervisning, der foregår på hold, hvor centrale dele af et specifikt emneområde gennemgås. I løbet af emneundervisningen forventes den studerende at arbejde med skriftlige opgaver og/eller mundtlige fremstillinger, individuelt og sammen med andre. I samarbejde med underviseren udvælger den studerende et særligt aspekt af emneområdet som sit projektemne. Den sidste del af semestret består af individuelt arbejde med informationssøgning og udformning af det valgte projekt, med underviseren som vejleder.
