Popular Culture in the USA :
American Studies and Material Texts
This course introduces ways in which we identify popular culture in comparison to, for example, high culture, folk culture or other national cultures. We shall look at definitions of cultural studies from within sociology and American studies, and contrast American culture with Asian/Asian-American culture in a few instances.
Once we have established the parameters of American popular culture theory, we will examine a wide range of material "texts" for interpretation, from popular music, Hollywood films, advertisements, commercials and a trip to McDonald's, at one end of the familiarity scale, to labour-saving technology for 19 th century housewives, at the other. Your own examples and ideas may be included, time and topicality permitting.
You may encounter anonymous Americans, (housewives and railway coolies), famous Americans (Elvis, Superman and Madonna), institutions (Disney and Disneyland), genres (the Western), stereotypes (the ideal immigrant), urban legends (a poodle in the microwave) and myths (the American dream).
The type of material employed in the pursuit of these phenomena will be varied and may include literary texts (novels, diaries, and journalism), pictures (photos, paintings and film), and material objects (Tupperware, coke bottles, art posters), in addition to secondary literature about culture definitions in general and about specific topics which we deal with in class.
As you may sense, the pace of this course may become hectic, and not all things can be included. However, one objective of this course is to include you! I intend to leave spaces for your contributions, ideas and presentations on American culture, seen from your perspective, to allow you to start developing your individual projects in class.
Den studerende kan først indstille sig til prøven i bachelorprojektet, når samtlige andre prøver på de to første år af bacheloruddannelsen er bestået.

Den første del af semesteret består af emneundervisning, der foregår på hold, hvor centrale dele af et specifikt emneområde gennemgås. I løbet af emneundervisningen forventes den studerende at arbejde med skriftlige opgaver og/eller mundtlige fremstillinger, individuelt og sammen med andre. I samarbejde med underviseren udvælger den studerende et særligt aspekt af emneområdet som sit projektemne. Den sidste del af semestret består af individuelt arbejde med informationssøgning og udformning af det valgte projekt, med underviseren som vejleder.
