When the League of Nations was established in 1919, it marked a turning point in European political and legal history. The organization was set up to prevent future wars and obliged states to follow international rules of conduct. The League inaugurated a new kind of international organization; it was a legal entity with rights, obligations, institutions, a permanent staff and a budget of its own. Although the League gathered together a lot of ideas and practices from the past, there had never been a world body like it before.
Its obvious failure to prevent the outbreak of World War II gave the organization a bad name. However, recent research has evaluated it more positively, appreciating the giant task of creating order and reconciliation after World War I, it was faced with, and stressing its achievements in fields of social, economic and humanitarian cooperation. This course offers a general introduction to the history of the League of Nations. It is the aim of the course to review the first international endeavours into collective security, disarmament and the peaceful settlement of international disputes; it will investigate the attitudes towards the League of victors and vanquished powers alike and touch upon differences in Great Power and small state attitudes towards the organization. Causes of the Leagues main political achievements and of its failure to curb international conflict and prevent the outbreak of World War II will be discussed. The course will introduce main theoretical approaches to the study of international organization and also touch upon the historiography of the League.
