"Berlin. History and Perception from the 19th century until Today."
If there is one city representing the 20th century in all its hopes and disasters, Berlin is the obvious choice. The Kaiser's captial, the creative and economic powerhouse of the 1920s and 1930s, prime city of National Socialism, divided by the Wall during the Cold War, and finally representing the end of the East-West division since the 1990s, Berlin has seen descrution, reconstruction and a constant work of interpretation and perception. While it was outshone by Paris, London and Vienna for centuries, Berlin grew to become a metropolis in its own right in the 19th century. With the growing traffic network, Berlin was a favourite city among travellers and tourists since the mid-19th century as well. Travel writers began producing descriptions and interpretations, creating a network of signs, narratives and conclusions on Berlin and 'the Germans'. Students will learn the history of the German metropolis and learn as well how this city was perceived by foreign travellers. Readings of contemporary travel writi
ngs thus is basis of this course. The course will organise an excursion to Berlin after which students write their own travel report on the German capital.
