Since the late 1980s the concept of diaspora has increasingly spread within the social sciences and even beyond. Earlier a rather exclusive domain of the science of religion and used specifically in relation to the Jewish diaspora the concept is nowadays intrinsically linked to studies of transnational migration and globalisation in general. The aim of the course is firstly to analyse the recent paradigmatic shifts related to this key concept. And secondly, the links between diaspora communities and their (imagined) homelands shall be exemplified considering a few case studies e.g. the Hindu diaspora. However, not only the links to the country of origin shall be highlighted in this regard but also the networks between various diasporas which have been the focus of more recent studies.
