In this course we will examine contemporary synthetic methodology for the construction of complex molecules.
The discussions in the course will include the types of synthetic approaches employed, including key chemical reactions and reagents used in the synthesis. Important organic transformations such as pericyclic, ionic and radical reactions will be covered, where emphasis will be made on the mechanisms, selectivity and stereochemistry.
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
·
analyse
and discuss the retrosynthesis of complex organic compounds
·
classify
the important protecting groups in organic synthesis
·
apply
knowledge of organic reactions to the synthesis of complex organic compounds
·
reflect
over the structure of complex organic compounds
·
describe
the mechanism for important organic reactions used in modern organic synthesis
