Treaty Ports, Business and Rebellions: Sino-Foreign Encounters in 19th Century China
Following the Nanjing Treaty of 1842 and the opening of five "treaty ports", Sino-foreign interaction increased and was shaped by new semi-colonial conditions within specific geographical spheres. Notwithstanding treaty revisions, various conflicts and even war, the treaty ports flourished, often also to the benefit of their Chinese inhabitants. The period discussed in this seminar covers the years of the First Opium War until the Boxer Movement in 1900. The treaty port system will be analyzed from the perspectives of imperialism, (semi-) colonialism, and modernism. In addition, we shall focus on networks and actors, in order to develop a broader picture of Sino-foreign conflict and interaction during the 19th century.
Den studerende kan først indstille sig til prøverne i Emneområderne og prøven Feltrapport, når disciplinerne Introduktion til Kinas historie og Introduktion til Kinas kultur og samfund er bestået.
