OVERTEGNET
Questioning media practices and bias in news production. Reflecting on newsroom practice, habits and processes, in order to review the product that the newsroom creates: news bulletins. The processing of news will be evaluated with a cultural anthropological focus in order to make meaning of the way in which news is shaped, formatted and prioritised daily.
Through an exploration of media production practices and journalistic culture of practice values the course will equip students to evaluate bias in news reports.
The course will from the outset be based on lectures but then progress into group work in which the students, will focus on analysing news bias on the same stories internationally, such as the American election and other internationally related stories in order for each student to evaluate the bias on different countries news bulletins framing of the same event. It is hoped that we this way will be able to map out the framing of the exact same event in different news outlets internationally.
Finally, the group work will be presented and evaluated in order for the whole class to review how each national broadcast news outlet cover the same story and get an overview of whether there are such things as internationally valid journalistic angles or whether for instance a Public Service Broadcast news outlet present stories differently than an non public service broadcaster.
In this way, the course will be both student driven and lecture led.
