Introduktion til mange-legeme fysik (Q2) ( efterår 2010 - 5 ECTS )

Rammer for udbud

  • Uddannelsessprog: engelsk (eller dansk)
  • Niveau: Graduate course
  • Semester/kvarter: 2nd quarter
  • Timer per uge: 6-7
  • Deltagerbegrænsning: None
  • Undervisningssted: Århus
  • Hovedområde: Det Naturvidenskabelige Fakultet
  • Udbud ID: 25940

Formål

This course provides an introduction both for experimentalists and theorists to the methods of quantum field theory applied to condensed matter systems. At the end of the course, the students will be able to use modern concepts in many-body physics research as well as have a broad basis to learn more advanced methods.

Indhold

First and second quantization, time-dependent quantum mechanics and linear response, real time Greens functions, mean-field approximation, imaginary time Greens functions, Wicks theorem, Feynman diagrams.

Faglige forudsætninger

Knowledge of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics at bachelor level is assumed. It is an advantage but not necessary to know the method of second quantization and complex function theory.

Underviser

Georg Bruun and Nikolaj Zinner

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform

4 hours of lectures and 2-3 hours of exercises per week

Læringsmål

Upon completing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Apply second quantization to describe quantum systems.
  • Discuss how to use Greens functions and linear response theory as a compact way to predict experimental observables.
  • Use the mean field method to describe interactions.
  • Predict non-zero temperature effects using the imaginary time formalism.
  • Generalize Feynman diagrammatic expansions to apply to any interacting many-body system.
