Indhold

The course is an introduction to modelling biological systems. The student will learn to build models of complex biological systems and decide upon the complexity needed to solve specific tasks, and reflect upon the mathematical basis of different types of models. The student will acquire a fundamental understanding of the algorithms often used in the field of biological models and how to implement them in the students own models. The student is also taught to do simple sensitivity analysis in order to understand which parameters are the most important in different types of models.

Læringsmål

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Set up conceptual models using Forrester diagrams and do a qualitative and a quantitative model formulation.
  • Build complex biological models using the Powersim Studio 8 software given information of a biological system.
  • Explain and classify different types of models.
  • To reflect on model structure and complexity given different cases that must be simulated.
  • To solve simple modelling problems using simple differential equations.
  • Explain and implement basic methods and algorithms often used to simulate biological processes.
  • Perform a simple sensitive analysis on selected parameters in biological models

Learning goals

  • To build models of biological systems using Powersim Studio 8 based on Forrester Diagrams and or information about a biological process.
  • Explain the difference between different types of models and classify them accordingly.
  • Evaluate and decide upon the complexity needed to solve a specific biological problem using a model
  • To perform a simple sensitivity analysis on a model and identify the most important parameters in a model.
  • To perform simple pre-implementation calculations that elucidates the system that should be modelled.

Bedømmelse

  • 7-point grading scale, internal examiner, 4 h written, individual exam using computer with internet and books. E-mail and other direct communication tools are not allowed during the exam.

Approval of 2 written reports of 3-7 pages is a prerequisite for attending the exam.
