The 20 th century's history of unprecedentedly rapid rationalization, urbanization, and industrialization has been punctuated by recurrent critiques of a society that is frequently seen as having become ever more artificial, unhealthy, technology-dependent and environmentally destructive - in a word, ever more removed from the standard of nature. From the simple-lifers of the early 1900s to the mid-century beatniks and hippies and the ecologists of more recent decades, critics of modern society have sought ways to recover a more "natural" way of life. Sometimes they have relocated from the city to the country to establish communal societies with likeminded individuals; at other times they have explored reformist lifestyle techniques ranging from outdoor hiking to nudism, vegetarianism, organic gardening and free love
Throughout this long history, the novel has served as an important and powerful vehicle both for critiquing industrial culture and for envisioning what a more natural alternative might look like. In this course we will try to unravel the countercultural motives and impulses informing a range of novels from the early-20 th -century heyday of modernization to the Age of Ecology in the 1970s. We will ask what these novels have in common, if anything, and to what extent they might be seen as forming a continuous tradition. In the process, we are likely to discover that the back-to-nature novel, although often propounding a social ideal of natural simplicity, is itself anything but simple and straightforward. Mirroring the complexity and ambiguity of the back-to-nature movement itself, the novels that emerged from it were characteristically open-ended and Janus-faced, at once nostalgic and utopian, backward- and forward-looking, anti-modern and modern.
