"If women lived in a different country from men and had never read any of their writings, they would have a literature of their own."
John Stuart Mill On the subjection of women (1869)
"It is commonplace in criticism to define American literature, in short story or novel form, as the chronicle of the solitary hero, of man alone, man against society, man as individual, endlessly testing his strength and durability against his own resources on a mythic, adventurous journey to epiphany and knowledge. ... What happens, then, when American literature is written by women."
Mickey Pearlman, American Women Writing Fiction
These quotes get to the heart of an interesting issue. What does it mean to be a ‘women writer'? Are there particular themes that make up a genre or category that can be identified in a meaningful way? Joyce Carol Oates, one of the authors we will consider, argues that there isn't a distinctive female voice (or male voice), or that if there is it is ‘symptomatic of inferior art.' With that question in the background, the course will consider works by women in the American context. The role that gender plays on these authors' works, both from the authors perspective, but also how these roles form in the narration, will be a major consideration, certainly, but the course will also focus on the American aspect of the title. Does reading women writers offer us an alternative definition of American literature, or of Americanness as a whole? To that end, we will also consider a range of topics typical of American literature, including race and identity, regionalism/regional identity, class and society, and explore the idea not only of what it means to be a ‘woman writer' or an American writer, but a woman writing in America at a particular time.
