In this course participants will develop a strong working knowledge of both traditional and modern theories of crime and punishment. In addition, they will become familiar with the main international rules and guidelines governing imprisonment and will be able to put national prison rules and practises into perspective in relation to these legal sources. In the process, participants will develop a practical understanding of prison-life in Denmark and Europe. Finally, participants will develop the ability to critically evaluate crime and prison statistics in these regions.
This course will outline both theoretical and practical aspects of modern-day crime and punishment. Numerous theoretical perspectives will be introduced and discussed in relation to real-world examples, case studies, legal statutes, and actual crime policy. Participants will also be introduced to the fundamentals of working with and evaluating criminal statistics. Depending on interest, visits to prisons and other criminal justice institutions may also be arranged.
The prerequisite for this course is an academic bachelor in law or other relevant social science. With the permisson of the instructor, alternative backgrounds may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Each lesson of the course will consist of a lecture by the instructor followed by a presentation from course participants. All participants are required to give at least one oral presentation before the class or part of it and submit one written paper during the course. One ot two prison visits are included.
