To promote student understanding of the two primary types of materials (metals and polymers), as well as the relationships that exist between the structural elements of materials and their mechanical properties.
To learn student how processing can change structure and the design considerations in selection, application, corrosion and degradation of materials and products.
Only mechanical properties are considered and thermal, electrical, magnetic and optical properties are not included. Ceramics and more advanced materials as composites are excluded in the course.
