The course deals with the pragmatic, semantic and morphosyntactic representation of linguistic expressions, starting with the speaker's intentions. The course aims to teach the students to regard grammatical issues in connection with the communicative function of language (including aspects of the linguistic and the non-linguistic context), in particular to make them aware of relations between formal, semantic and pragmatic aspects of linguistic expressions.
BA in linguistics or other basic knowledge of linguistics structures and the analysis of language use.

Undervisningen består af en kombination af underviserens forelæsninger, studerendes oplæg og diskussioner.
Studerende forventes at deltage aktivt i undervisningen, holde oplæg, og deltage regelmæssigt i uformelle diskussioner om behandling af grammatiske fænomener.

Reading materials mainly consist of journal articles and book chapters. A list of readings will be provided a few weeks before classes begin.
Background: we do not use a specific textbook (see above), but it may be useful to know that this course takes its inspiration from Hengeveld and Mackenzie's Functional Discourse Grammar: A typologically-based theory of language structure (Oxford University Press 2008), and Willem Levelt's Speaking: from intention to articulation (MIT Press 1989).
