In the evaluation of the student's exam performance, special emphasis is placed on evaluating the extent to which the
student:
À· Can document knowledge of key cognitive meaning theories.
À· Is able to turn theory into analytical practice.
À· Can significantly discuss the cognitive and semiotic theories.
À· Demonstrates independence in theoretical and analytical practice.
NB! The courses Cognition & Semiotics and Cognition & Language in combination give 30 ECTS.
The course on semiotics and cognition aims at introducing to basic concepts in cognitive semiotics: metaphor, blending, frame, schema, conceptual structure and generally the relation between perception, conceptualization and linguistic expression. Key authors are, among others, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, Len Talmy, Jean Petitot, Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner. Students will be introduced to the fundamental mental processes involved in human meaning making as well as to the kind of conceptual structure, abstract representations, etc: humans make use of to shape their conceptualizations;
2 years study in a discipline of the Humanities.
