Ritual and Body: Possible Correlations Between Religious Belief and Health (Religiøs coping)
The purpose of this seminar is to study and discuss the possible correlations between religious belief and health, and thereby to learn more about how religious belief and behaviour connect to body and mind.
The course will include a critical reading of the literature on religious coping and alternative medicine, and we will look at a number of empirical studies of correlations between religious belief and health outcome. The case studies include both clinical experiments and fieldwork studies, e.g. from fire-walking in Spain and Cavadee in Mauritius. We will also discuss the psychological mechanisms related to high-arousal rituals and religious coping. Part of the lectures will consist of talks by invited experts within psychology, neuroscience and the study of religion followed by general discussion.
