At the end of the course, the participants should be able to
• Apply descriptive statistics on business and economics data
• Explain probabilities and do computations with probabilities
• Do statistical calculations on data in Excel
• Interpret discrete and continuous random variables
• Interpret Bernoulli, Binomial, and Normal distributions
• Apply estimators of mean, variance, and correlation
• Apply statistical hypothesis tests concerning population parameters
• Apply simple regression analysis
The course is concerned with the probability theory, estimation and hypothesis testing needed for economists and business economists to acquire a fundamental understanding of empirical studies. An integral part of an empirical study, and of this course, is presentation of descriptive statistics using various IT systems.
COURSE SUBJECT AREAS:
• 1. Population, descriptive statistics
• 2. Uncertainty and probability
• 3. Random variables, distribution
• 4. Expectation, variance, covariance, correlation
• 5. Popular distributions: Bernoulli, Binomial, Normal
• 6. Estimation theory
• 7. Hypothesis testing
• 8. Simple regression
REQUIRED COURSES (progression): None
LECTURER: Tom Engsted
The lectures introduce the fundamental theory of statistics, which will be illustrated by business and economics applications. The exercises practice the statistical theory by solving statistical problems, which are relevant to business and economics. Excel will be used as statistical computer program to solve problems and present descriptive statistics for the different data sets.
