Formål
The production of biomass for energy purposes is expected to accelerate in the future. In a number of areas energy crops differ from traditional agricultural crops, and the different conversion technologies used will have different requirements to the chemical composition of the biomass.
The aim of the course is to equip the student with the interdisciplinary skills required to be able to list the advantages and disadvantages of specific crops for energy production and to account for the impact of energy crop production on the environment, climate and landscape.
Indhold
The course will focus on the principal differences between cropping system and crop types with respect to:
-
annual versus perennial crops
-
crops with C3 or C4 photosynthesis
-
choice of crop in relation to soil type and climate conditions
-
cultivation, harvest and plant protection of specific crops such as rapeseed, cereals, grass, turnips, hemp, willow, miscanthus, sorrel, reed canary grass, etc.
-
biomass quality including content of sugars, starch, inulin, cellulose, lignin, oil and protein
-
important crop qualities for storage, fermentation, combustion and oil extraction. nutrient cycles and losses
-
energy balance of the production system
-
emission of greenhouse gases and the effect on soil carbon balance
-
landscape effects
-
production economy - crop calculations.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform
The first part of the course will be based on lectures, theoretical exercises and excursions. Project-based work will be conducted in groups.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

Bedømmelse
One written report has to be approved prior to exam. Exam is a project report 8-12 pages and oral examination for 20 min. without means of aid. The report and oral exam counts equal.
Internal examiner, the Danish 7-point grade scale.
Reexamination will be arranged together with the Course Responsible.
