Formål

The aim of the course is to give the student basic knowledge concerning harvest technology and handling methods and chains for energy crops and straw. The main objective is to enable the student to understand the working principle and functionality of different harvest machines, and thereby be able to set-up and analyse crop specific harvest and handling chains.

Indhold

The course provides a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering solutions for the harvesting, transport, storage and pre-treatment of annual and perennial energy crops and straw. It includes the use of models that depending on the methods chosen for the individual processes from the field to the product end use can describe the combined crop handling and logistics chain.

Students should also be able to describe and define suitable technical solutions for harvesting and handling operations. The aim is to enable students to produce calculations on operations and to estimate capacity and energy consumption for both individual operations and the whole handling chain for straw and energy crops from the growth stage to the processing plant where the product is converted to energy and any by-products.

On the basis of the course the students will be able to choose suitable technologies for the pre-treatment of the crop in the form of drying, chopping or pelleting. The course will form the basis for calculating the energy consumption involved in the pre-treatment processes.

Læringsmål

On completion of the course the student should be able to describe and assess the mechanical engineering solutions for the harvesting and handling of energy crops and straw

Objectives:

  • describe the different types of harvesting machinery
  • list advantages and disadvantages of single-pass versus multi-pass harvesting methods
  • select the machinery required for harvest of specific crops based on energy and time consumption and on economy
  • analyse the need for storage of crops and select storage methods, including storage under natural atmospheric conditions and airtight storage
  • calculate estimates for the drying facilities required for specific crops and harvesting methods
  • describe the pelleting technology including basic function, capacity and energy consumption that can be used for straw and energy crops
  • use models to analyse and optimise the logistics from field to processing plant

Bedømmelse

Approval is a combination of two written reports 8-10 pages and oral examination. One report is done in a group of 3 - 5 students, and one is done individually. Each student specifies the contribution to the reports. The oral examination is 20 minutes without preparation and means of aid.  Internal examiner, the Danish 7-point grade scale.

Reexamination will be arranged together with the Course Responsible.
