Renewable energies are going to play the key role in the transition from today's fossil based energy system to tomorrow's sustainable energy system. This course will give an overview of the most important renewable energy sources. We will discuss both their individual characteristics and their interplay in a future energy system.
The subjects will include: the role of energy in society (interplay with politics and economics), the characteristics of energy consumption (magnitude, geographic and temporal distribution), the characteristics of energy production and distribution (stability, tunability, transmission losses), wind, solar radiation, hydro-energy and biomass as energy resources.

The final exam is oral.
The students can choose to conduct an independent study on selected material. They will then have to produce a written report, which will be evaluated and discussed as part of the final exam.
The assessment is after the 7- level scale, internal marking.
Reexamination will be arranged together with the Course Responsible.
