This course charts the historical formations and contemporary transformations of Great Britain from the early 18 th century to the present day. Why and how did the constituent parts of Britain unite? Does a common British identity exist? Can Britain disintegrate?
One of the most important debates in Britain today is about the nature and future of Britain and ‘Britishness'. The state which underpinned the British identity is no longer the confident structure it once was. The pillars of empire, monarchy and parliament have crumbled, been scandalized and discredited respectively. The nations that make up the United Kingdom are challenging the central government from below and pushing for ever more independence. From above, the European Union increasingly provides an alternative supranational political framework. In this context the British state is struggling to present a convincing narrative of common purpose and project as well as of shared identity.
The process of devolution (devolving power to regional parliaments and assemblies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) in the late 1990s was a bold constitutional move to reconfigure and remake the United Kingdom. It was supposed to satisfy the nationalist demand for stronger self-determination whilst preserving the Union. However, it has also created a centrifugal effect where the nations are driven apart and increasingly identify as Scots, Welsh, English and Northern Irish rather than British. The course examines this tension between the idea of the Union (unionism) and the claims of the four component nations (nationalism).
The analytical emphasis will be on reconstructing the narratives of unionism and nationalism in original historical and contemporary documents as they appear around the formation of the United Kingdom; in the home rule debates of the 1880s, 1970s and 1990s as well as in the present post-devolution scenario.
The course combines different disciplines within the humanities and social sciences: History, political thought, sociology, cultural studies and some textual analysis and discourse theory. During the course we will analyse concepts of nationhood and statehood, of social, cultural and political identities and discuss how communities and nations are perceived, formed, defined and maintained.
Den studerende kan først indstille sig til prøven i bachelorprojektet, når samtlige andre prøver på de to første år af bacheloruddannelsen er bestået.

Den første del af semesteret består af emneundervisning, der foregår på hold, hvor centrale dele af et specifikt emneområde gennemgås. I løbet af emneundervisningen forventes den studerende at arbejde med skriftlige opgaver og/eller mundtlige fremstillinger, individuelt og sammen med andre. I samarbejde med underviseren udvælger den studerende et særligt aspekt af emneområdet som sit projektemne. Den sidste del af semestret består af individuelt arbejde med informationssøgning og udformning af det valgte projekt, med underviseren som vejleder.

Fri skriftlig hjemmeopgave inden for et nærmere defineret område af emnet. Projektopgavens emne og titel aftales mellem den studerende og underviser/vejleder.
Omfang 14-16 sider.
Den skriftlige hjemmeopgave skal være forsynet med en bibliografi og skal indeholde et resumé på dansk i et omfang af en halv til en hel side. Resuméet vil indgå i den samlede bedømmelse.
