Although it is now much reduced in scope and influence, the consequences and repercussions of the British Empire are still felt globally. This course provides a survey over the most important periods and events in the historical development and decline of the British Empire, as well as its significant impacts in the contemporary world.
The course begins by examining the nature of imperialism. Various theoretical models and approaches to understanding imperialism and empire building and their consequences will be presented, compared and discussed.
The historical development of the British Empire will then be traced. Three main periods of the empire will be examined in detail:
To explore these three periods in detail, the British colonial experience in a number of particular locations will be examined, including North America, the Caribbean, Australia, South Africa, and India. Finally, the course will examine the impact that the British Empire still has on global affairs, including the Commonwealth and the post-WWII world economic and political order.
