This course introduces anthropological research into the unification processes in Europe. The course starts with an introduction to the anthropology of Europe and of European integration and goes on to explore a select number of cases which illustrate the significance of culture to various integration processes. These include explorations of EU's cultural policies, the discussions of Europe's borders, ways of imagining communities in Europe and identity discussions, for instance in relation to food, mobility and memory.
The aim of the course is to gove students an understanding of the ways that anthropology can contribute to our understanding of the cultural aspects of the integration processes in Europe, and to enable students to analyse relevant empirical material. Students are encouraged to integrate the theories they are introduced to in the course "Theories of Culture and Society in Europe" in their analytical work.
