On completion of the module, the student will be able to, on a scientific basis :
The module will offer a set of analyses about lifelong learning policies placed in the framework of the ‘knowledge society' debate, which is currently prominent in the social sciences.
Students will have the opportunity to investigate the theoretical underpinnings of these concepts and other relevant concepts. They will go through policies and practices related to these concepts at national, regional, European and global levels. They will investigate the Danish and Nordic traditions of lifelong learning and their transformation under the impact of ‘knowledge society' policies in the region. Particular attention will be paid to the European Union and the prominence lifelong learning has acquired in the process for integration and enhancement of economic competitiveness. Moreover, reference will be made to main international organisations which have placed lifelong learning at the core of their research agendas and policy recommendations.
The students will also have opportunity to go through the recent intensive debates and research production with regard to the relationship between active citizenship and lifelong learning policies and practices.
Finally, the module will examine Higher Education reforms as part of lifelong learning policies, and particularly the transformation of universities in light of the new regimes of knowledge production, transmission and certification

The module will be taught through lectures and discussion groups.
In the lectures, students will have the opportunity to listen to a specialised presentation and engage into dialogue with the lecturer.
In the discussion groups, students will reflect on some text(s) which will have read beforehand. All such texts are included in the module's compendium or are available on the Blackboard and are indicated in the programme as ‘reading for the session'.
Please, note that this reading is
necessary
for the student to participate in the discussion group, as the discussion will be based on this reading. For this purpose, students are given, under the heading ‘preparation', some guidelines, themes or questions which they have to consider when they read the designated text(s). Students are expected to make every effort to exercise their capacity for critical understanding during both their preparation and their participation in the sessions.

Students are expected to make a decision about the topic they would like to work / be examined on during February. Students will find information about the research profile of the lecturers and/or supervisors assigned to the module from the module's site on the Blackboard. In making their decision about the topic they want to work on students should contact the member of staff they would prefer to be supervised by. Students are advised to contact potential supervisors soon, as every member of staff is assigned to supervise only a limited number of students.
