Formål

The course is a natural continuation of the 3 rd Semester course: Management. The objective of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge about research and central theories within the area of strategic leadership, strategy implementation and Human Resource Management (HRM) in companies, and in addition the objective is to enable the student to give an account of this knowledge, use this knowledge in the terms of the issues related to the subject area as well as to formulate an account of the knowledge in a scientific way on completion of the course.

The course gives the student a broad foundation for constructive participation in the interpretation and solution of problems and challenges in connection with management of human resources.

Indhold

Human resource management (HRM) seeks to maximize organisational performance through the adoption of best practices in the management of people. In seeking to do so HRM draws on theoretical foundations from disciplines such as psychology, sociology and industrial relations. The overall subject area for this course is to analyse practice, theory and implications from research in an accessible way. The origins of HRM are considered, the current stand of HRM is analysed and the future developments within HRM are considered. Key features are:

· Management of employment relationships (from recruitment via personnel development to termination)

Personal development

This course will strengthen the student's ability to take a theoretical as well as a practical view of the challenging task of being concerned with the well-being of people and managing the people in organisations. The student will learn how the HRM function can assist the organisation to become more effective and profitable.

Compulsory reading not finally chosen yet but "Human Resource Management - a concise analysis" by Eugene McKenna and Nic Beech, Pearson Education Ltd., 2002 is a relevant suggestion.

 

Articles, notes, cases and supplementary material. This material is to be selected during the course to achieve best relevance.

IT skills

In connection with IT-systems used for HRM a general understanding of databases is required.

 

Requirements for passing an examination

The student must participate at least 80 % in the course.

 

The assignment is rated: "Passed" or "Not passed". The rating "passed" must equal at least 02 or above according to the Danish 7-step scale. Students getting the rating "Not passed" must prepare a new assignment.

Criteria for achieving objectives

· The student must within the given HRM issue be able to formulate the knowledge within the subject area by cumulatively to:

· Give an account of knowledge and use of knowledge in an easily understandable way.

· Give an account of knowledge and use of knowledge in a well-structured way and with good efficiency (only include content which is relevant to the subject).

· Give an account of knowledge and use of knowledge in a clear and explicit didactic, explanation- and/or comprehension-oriented with metacommunication when necessary and well-placed. Is able to apply scientific standard modes of expression adapted to - or developed in relation to the subject and the task.

· Present a solution to the given HRM issue and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this solution on a literary, systematic basis.

Assignment excl. oral defence

 

The evaluation is based on a written assignment not exceeding 7 standard pages in which the student prepares a solution to a given HRM issue.

 

An internal examiner is used. Rating: "Passed" or "Not passed".
