The objective of the course is to provide the student with knowledge about research and central theories within the subject area: "Integrals and vectors" In addition, the objective is to enable the student to give an account of this knowledge, by using this knowledge to solve basic mathematical problems.
Course background:
The students must have mathematics at ‘B'-level (high school exam). However, this level is insufficient when attending many of the courses at the study programme.
Thus, it is necessary to provide the students with sufficient mathematical
skills within a number of subject areas significantly above a high school ‘A'-level.
The course contains the following main subjects:
1. Functions in more variables
Functions in two variables
Partial differentiations
Graphical representation of functions in two variables
Complex functions/chain rules
Implicit differentiation
Optimisation
Optimisation of more variables
2. Integration
Indefinite and definite integrals
Infinite integrals
Integration by parts
Integration by substitution
Specific definite integrals
3. Financial applications
Compound interest
Geometric series
Investment appraisal
4. Matrix and vector algebra
Linear equation systems
Matrix operations
Matrix multiplication
Transposition
Vectors
Vectors and the geometry of space
5. Determinants and matrix inversion
Determinants
Inversion
