Formål

Wind energy is becoming an ever more important part of the energy infrastructure around the globe. This course will give the students a thorough introduction to the physical and engineering aspects of wind energy: what characterizes wind as an energy resource, how is this energy harvested, and how is the result integrated in the electricity network.

Indhold

The subjects will include: the global, regional and local wind systems, the geostrophic wind and the atmospheric boundary layer, statistical properties of the wind resource, mechanical construction of a modern wind turbine, the physics of producing torque, the aerodynamics of turbine blades, the conversion of mechanical to electrical power, the loads on the mechanical structure of a turbine, the placement and layout of a wind farm, the control of a single wind turbine and of an entire wind farm, the connection of single turbines and wind farms to the electricity network.

Læringsmål

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • describe and explain the main characteristics of wind as an energy resource
  • describe and explain the working of wind turbines
  • calculate approximately production and load characteristics for a given wind turbine in a given environment
  • critically evaluate models for integration of wind power in the electricity network

Bedømmelse

The final exam is oral.

The students can choose to conduct an independent study on selected material. They will then have to produce a written report, which will be evaluated and discussed as part of the final exam.

The assessment is after the 7- level scale, internal marking.

Reexamination will be arranged together with the Course Responsible.
