Formål

Objectives of course

  • 1. To learn about different ways that social remembering has been studied, with a particular focus on psychological approaches but also including approaches from other disciplines.
  • 2. To think critically about the pros and cons of different research approaches and what can be learned from each.
  • 3. To synthesise findings from different areas.
  • 4. To learn more generally about how research is done, how to read and critique journal articles, and how to interpret experimental findings.

Indhold

We often share both the experience and remembering of events in our lives. Because of this, our social contexts may be an important determinant of what and how we remember. Research in the social sciences, from disciplines such as sociology, philosophy and history, has long been interested in the ways that large-scale groups like societies and generations can share memories of the past. More recently, experimental psychologists have focused on small groups, both lab groups and naturalistic groups like families and work teams, to study how remembering together is similar or different to remembering alone. While the social remembering done by large and small groups is clearly related, there has been little cross-talk between disciplines. In this course, we aim to look at findings from research traditions within psychology, as well as research from other disciplines, to understand how individual memory fits within a broader picture of social and collective memory.
