COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course takes a tour through modern labour economics. The main focus is on empirical and theoretical investigations on the functioning of the labour market from a microeconomic perspective. The choice of topics will vary according to the most recent research agenda in microoriented labour economics. Natural topics are how agents in the labour market react to the design of labour market institutions like unemployment insurance benefits, active labour market policies, employment protection legislation and so forth.

In addition, topics from other, but strongly related, fields may also be included. This could be questions related to health, education, family or integration of immigrants (to mention some obvious candidates).

The following topics will be covered:

  • Labour Supply, Taxation and Retirement
  • Education and Human Capital
  • Compensating Wage Differentials and Discrimination
