In the final evaluation it will be taken into account to what extent the student:
- demonstrates appropriate knowledge and understanding of the course literature;
- demonstrates analytical and pratical understanding of the themes and topics of the course;
- demonstrates knowlwdge of the theoretical and methodological considerations introduced during the course;
- is able to discuss a current topic academically;
- demonstrates ability to structure and give a presentation of a given topic.
This course seeks to explore the eastward expansion of the European Union from the perspective of both prospective and current members. In the last decade, the European Union (EU) has evolved from a modestly sized community of predominantly Western European countries to an organisation stretching from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and the borders of Russia. The most dramatic expansion of the European Union in recent years has taken place in the formerly socialist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Will this process continue in the years to come, and what do the ambitions of the EU and candidates for membership tell us about modern European identity? Does the EU seek to expand as far as Ukraine and Turkey? How will the EU manage its relationship with Russia and the security ramifications of the new European geography? Will the advantages promised by EU membership be sufficient to maintain and preserve stability in the Balkans? What are the economic consequences of expansion? Simultaneously, the accelerated enlargement has heightened tensions and stoked an ongoing debate on the internal structure of the Union. How does the EU balance widening and the deepening? In addition to scholarly literature on the aforementioned topics, reading on current affairs from electronic and other media will be employed.
