This course focuses on the competitive strategy of the firm, examining issues central to its long- and short-term competitive position. The first part of the course develops frameworks that are useful in analyzing a firm's and an industrys competitive environment and the specifics of a firms positioning within its competitive context. We then focus on the development of firm-specific capabilities that contribute to competitive advantage. Finally we address cost- and differentiation advantages, the effect of industry maturity, and how innovation is a central element in the search for competitive advantage.
COURSE SUBJECT AREAS:
Part 1: Introduction to the concept of strategy and the history of strategic management
Part 2: Analysis of the External Environment:
Analyzes and evaluates relevant elements of the general and competitive environments, and their implications for the profitability of the organization as well as the industry.
Part 3: Internal Analysis: Explores the role of resources and capabilities in strategy formulation and the development of resources and capabilities. Appraise the profit-earning potential of resources and capabilities.
Part 4: Analysis of competitive advantage: Analysis the emergence and sustainability of competitive advantage in different market settings including cost and differentiation advantage.
Part 5: Business strategies in different industry contexts: Analysis the effect of industry evolution, the effect of technology-based industries and the management of innovation
