In this course we examine different theoretical approaches to understanding the relationship between people and institutions such as nation-states, corporations, or NGOs. We contrast approaches that stress the importance of seeing these institutions as powerful actors that shape and mould populations according to particular agendas, with other approaches that stress the variety of small scale interactions and interests that make up these institutions and question how we come to "see" these institutions in different ways.
As an integrated part of the course students will be asked to analyse current Danish and international cases of political management of populations, in contexts such as the changing relationship between state and citizens or managerial attempts to mould "corporate culture", from different theoretical stand points and assess the contributions of different perspectives. Therefore student presentations and group discussions will play a significant role in the course.
