Horror fiction is a very popular, a very old, and a very puzzling genre. Why are so many of us attracted to horrible stories about toothy monsters, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, flesh-eating zombies, and moaning ghosts?
Being more than mindless entertainment, horror stories say something about the cultural context that produces them - and the human minds that consume them. Why do they have this peculiar resonance with the human mind, and what cultural anxieties might be darkly channelled in individual horror texts?
In this course we will look at a selection of the very best that modern horror literature has to offer. We will also study some of the main critical responses to horror fiction, e.g. psychoanalytical or Freudian theory, historicist or contextual approaches, and the cognitive-Darwinian school of horror theory. These schools offer different explanations of the structure of horror fictions, and they give different accounts of how horror fictions work and why some of us seek the safe thrill that the genre offers.
At the start of the semester, a selection of critical texts as well as short stories spanning the 20 th century will be made available. In the meantime, you should get hold of the following books which will surely spice up your Christmas vacation. And remember: in academia, no one can hear you scream.
