Ved bedømmelsen af prøvepræstationen vil der blive lagt vægt på, i hvor høj grad den studerende:
Fast food, slow food, agro-industries, small family farms, mad cows, biofuels, food miles, gmo, hormone injected beef, globalisation, agro-tourism, the climate challenge, the obesity challenge, the global food crisis, identity politics, labeling, Parma ham, organic foods, star chefs, rising food prices, trade conflicts, security, everyday life ... These are some of the topical issues that may come to mind when talking about food and farming. In fact, food and farming can be considered as a political field where political, social, economic and cultural concerns are intimately linked, and often conflict.
The seminar will focus on the politics of food and farming in the European Union (EU), and will in particular address questions such as: Why is the EU at all involved in these areas? What is the shape of the EU's involvement, and how has it changed over time? Who are the actors involved, and what do they say about it? What are the underlying assumptions and conflicts? Why is this so? During the course students will work with a range of cases as well as theoretical and methodological approaches relevant to the study of the politics of food and farming. Students will also engage in a mini-research project and workshop with a view to putting into perspective the politics of food and farming in the EU in the upcoming European Parliament election campaign of in June 2009. Through working with the cases, the research project and workshop, students will demonstrate knowledge of how to analyse current political developments based on a selection of relevant theoretical and methodological approaches.
It is expected that participants in the course have a basic knowledge of how the EU's institutions function. If you did not follow the course "European Union Institutions" in the autumn 2008, you should contact the instructor before enrolling.
It is expected that students enrolled in this course engage in the activities throughout. This involves reading the required materials in preparation for classes, and taking part in the planned research and workshop activities.
It is possible for students who wish to do so to directly integrate the activities of this course in the writing of their Bachelor's project at European Studies.

Required literature (ordered from Stakbogladen)
1) Ann-Christina L. Knudsen, Farmers on Welfare. The Making of Europe's Common Agricultural Policy. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2009 [publication date: end of January 2009]
2) Course Reader
Additional suggested readings - one or several of the following:
Marion Nestle, Food Politics. How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health . University of California Press, 2007 (2 nd ed) (the 1 st ed. is also ok)
Michael Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma. The Search for a Perfect Meal in a Fast-food World . Bloomsbury Publishing, 2007.
Eric Schlosser, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal . Perinneal 2002.
Alan Warde, Trust in Food. A Comparative and Institutional Analysis . Palgrave Macmillan 2007.
Note that the first three books are all applied to the United States, but they still serve as a useful foil for the study of the politics of food and farming in the EU. When reading any of these suggested readings, ask yourself questions such as: who are the different actors involved, and how do they in different ways attempt to influence the way that the politics of food and farming is framed?
