In the evaluation of the student's performance, special emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student:
Study of the ideas of the Vienna Circle (philosophers, mathematicians, social scientists including A. J. Ayer, Rudolph Carnap, F.A.M. Schlick, Hans Reichenbach, Otto Neurath). The fundamental elements of logical positivism (or logical empiricism) are investigated. Topics to be covered may include the relationship between meaning and verification, the nature and status of the verification principle, the elimination of metaphysics, the character of logical and mathematical truth, protocol sentences, the unity of science, and emotivism. Relationships between major logical positivist claims are explored. The course is of particular relevance to students interested in the development of analytic philosophy, the philosophy of language, epistemology or the philosophy of science.

The instruction is based on select texts and typically takes the form of a workshop run by the teacher in which the teacher and the students prepare presentations and participate in discussions.

There are no standard student collections for logical positivism so readings will be taken from a variety of sources. Xerox copies of articles will be available through the Philosophy Department.
