Indhold

Study of the ideas of the Vienna Circle (philosophers, mathematicians, social scientists including A. J. Ayer, Rudolph Carnap, F.A.M. Schlick, Hans Reichenbach, Otto Neurath). The fundamental elements of logical positivism (or logical empiricism) are investigated. Topics to be covered may include the relationship between meaning and verification, the nature and status of the verification principle, the elimination of metaphysics, the character of logical and mathematical truth, protocol sentences, the unity of science, and emotivism. Relationships between major logical positivist claims are explored. The course is of particular relevance to students interested in the development of analytic philosophy, the philosophy of language, epistemology or the philosophy of science.
