The history of Europe since 1945 has been characterized by numerous political initiatives to develop and enlarge the integration between the European states. Yet the nation state has been the main framework for the political, economic and social life in the European countries. Despite all political attempts to create more European integration, the idea of the nation has not died, and nationalism has had a large support among many European politicians as well as among large parts of the population. The Nation has played a major role in European politics, and the idea of the European Union as a cooperation between the European nations instead of as a federal project is today the dominating one.
The aim of the course is to examine the development of the European nation state and of nationalism in Europe from the end of World War II to the present days. Special emphasis will be put on the development of the idea of the nation and of nationalism within the political parties in Western Europe since 1945, on the differences and the similarities between the development of the idea of the nation and of nationalism in different European countries, on the new strong nationalism in Eastern and Central Europe since 1989, and on the growing reluctance against immigration from countries outside Europe among parts of the European populations during the latest years.
