Instead of pre-colonial structures of kingship with their own forms of legitimization British colonial administrators tried to implement their vision of a "modern" bureaucratic and rational state-apparatus. Following Indian independence democratization and elective politics on an all India level altered the state in new ways. Looking at the state in 20th century India the major questions to be discussed in the course will be: How the state has been conceptionalized, represented and transformed in pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial times and how the state in all its manifestations is experienced in everyday life in contemporary India?
The course will start the 9th of February
