Conversation Analysis is the study of talk as it is used in interactions. This field has a long history, and within it, there has always been a dual focus on mundane or "non-institutional" interaction on the one hand, and different kinds of institutional interaction on the other. In recent years, the focus on institutional interaction has been taken a step further, in that conversation analytic researchers have not only examined social and linguistic practices in different institutions, but they have also engaged in attempts to improve these practices, for instance by using their results for "consciousness raising" among professionals in the health sector, in companies, and in social institutions, or by explicitly advicing on the improvement of such practices. Such more "engaged" research is what will be termed "applied conversation analysis". During this course we will familarize ourselves with the studies and practical applications, as they are described in recent literature. We will also carry out investigations and, where possible, engage in "consciousness raising" practices. Students must have some basic acquaintance with the methodology of Conversation Analysis. If in doubt, please contact the teacher who can help with advice on preparation for the course.
