Formål (aims). The course investigates how especially the Internet and Internet-enabled mobile devices interact in diverse cultural settings with primary conceptions of self and community, with specific attention to how these conceptions change and hybridize in conjunction with emerging digital communication technologies. The course seeks to develop an overview of current empirical research, important theories, and questions for future research.

The course will consist of lectures accompanied by weekly discussion / seminar meetings emphasizing student contributions, including a final week of student presentations of their own research and writing.
We will begin with contemporary empirical findings on how the Internet and Internet-enabled mobile devices interact with multiple dimensions of societies and cultures (e.g., gender & sexuality, politics, religion; virtual worlds and communities; games; pornography; music, etc.). We will examine cross-cultural perspectives - especially on the primary conceptions of self, community, and their interrelationships - both within and between Western and Eastern traditions. We then turn to important theories and methodologies - those guiding contemporary research, grand theories of communication technologies vis-à-vis self and community (primarily, McLuhan through Ong and Foucault), and theoretical reflections on ‘culture.'
A "red thread" of our inquiry throughout will be attention to the correlative questions: (a) how far are network communication technologies re-shaping Western and Eastern conceptions of the self vis-à-vis community - and thereby moving us in the direction of a shared (perhaps in part as hybridized) "global" set of such conceptions, and (b) how far do local traditions, practices, beliefs, and other components of ‘culture' resist incorporation into a more global but homogenous ‘mediatized culture'?
Finally, students will identify a research question / topic that they will explore in their concluding paper/research project.
