Each year a panel of judges awards the Man Booker Prize (£50,000 plus a great deal of fame and fortune) to the best novel of the year. A shortlist of six novels is presented first, and the prize attracts a huge amount of media attention. Candidates must be citizens of a Commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland, and novels published by the authors themselves are not accepted. Using the Man Booker Prize as its starting point, this course will focus on the issue of quality in contemporary British and Commonwealth fiction. What is ‘quality' in fiction? Can it be defined, and is it at all reasonable to award prizes for ‘best' novels? Is the concept of ‘quality' in fiction universal - in other words, would the winners of the Man Booker Prize have won at any time in human history, or do they reflect trends in modern British/Commonwealth society? Among other things, we will consider the motivation of the Man Booker organisation, the responses of the winners and candidates, and the views of the literary critics.
A variety of aspects of quality in fiction will be analysed, including readability, style, plot, characterisation, and what could be defined loosely as ‘literary merit' (originality, for instance).
