While many literary critics today propose that the Gothic is dead, and that its significance in literature has been depleted by society's obsession with instantaneous horror, particularly in film, analyses of a number of terror-based postmodernist texts, will, in this course, work toward an understanding of Gothic-postmodernism to suggest that the Gothic is still very much alive and relevant to the study of contemporary literature.
The course will review distinctly Gothic traits at work on a fundamental level in postmodernist works, observing the sublime experience of terror, spectral characters, doppelgängers, hellish waste lands and the demonised or possessed, as the most obvious Gothic inscriptions in these postmodernist narratives. It will also look back to the decadent and modernist Gothic to analyse the nature of the survival of the Gothic genre through, Bram Stoker and T.S Eliot through to its definitive presence in postmodernist texts and as such comment on the nature of and reasons for its adaptation to dominant literary modes of a particular context.
Surveying Gothic-postmodernism as a hybrid literary mode, the course will evaluate current critical thought on both the Gothic and postmodernism. The perspective of the course will be formulated from the theories of 18 th century continental philosophers and postmodern cultural theorists and important questions will be posed in relation to the classification of genres and texts within ‘literature'.
