This course will examine some of the basic ways in which literature has been understood in the 20th and early 21st century in the anglophone world, focussing particularly on definitions by 'new criticism', Sartre, T. S. Eliot, Bakhtin and recent Cognitive critics. It will try to formulate a working definition of literature, as something written in language about what is not and cannot be confined to language, with the help of selected texts by recent writers (Wendt, Hamid, Devi etc), as well as references to earlier writers (Shakespeare, the Brontës, Emily Dickinson).
The purpose of the course would be develop ways of reading literature that depend on literary categories of evaluation, and do not fall back upon political, moral and other non- literary perspectives (but do not ignore them either).
Along with primary texts, which the student will have to purchase, the course will use a selection of essays by various critics. An anthology containing the essays (c. 150 pages) will be available for purchase from Stakbogladen by the last week of January. Some short primary texts will also be made available in class. The course will alternate between readings of critical/secondary texts and primary texts.
