A number of errors associated with non-native European English that occur frequently are based on difficulty with the aspectual system of English (the way the time course of events and processes is expressed), for example: "I am believing in education." Other common errors are associated with the grammatical properties of English verbs and nouns, for example: "I must to buy new furnitures."
We will compare theoretical approaches to these errors, beginning with an earlier framework in which errors are examined as they appear in learner performance, relating those errors directly to contrasts between native and target languages. We will refer to a useful basic guide to examining learner errors based on differences in form between students' respective native languages and English (Swan and Smith 1987).
We will subsequently study and evaluate more recent frameworks in which predictions are made about the errors that learners are likely to make, based on factors that apply regardless of the native language and the target language of the learner (Cook 2008).
We will also evaluate articles dealing with grammatical form in the classroom and consider what constitute best practices for working with students who aim to speak and write English that is as close as possible to the standard speech and writing of native English speakers.
